What is the IUE?

The Institute for Urban Education (IUE) is a four-year undergraduate program that leads to a degree in elementary or middle school education with a focus in the teaching of math, science, and literacy.  The program is specifically targeted to   develop teachers for urban schools.  Students receiving IUE scholarships will make a commitment to teach in an urban district following graduation in exchange for financial support. 

Features of the Program include:

  • Courses designed to prepare exemplary elementary teachers
  • On-site practical experience teaching and learning in urban schools
  • Time spent in urban schools starting in the 1st semester
  • Summer cultural experiences working in the community
  • Innovative classes taught in school classrooms
  • Participation in Arts & Sciences and School of Education classes all four years
  • Enhanced interaction with faculty
